Engineering Education

Engineering,  the word that defines our modern times. Everything from a simple door-lock to the Mars-rover. “Curiosity” is the product of an engineer’s mind. Stating it in technical terms ‘Engineering is the application of scientific, economic, social and practical knowledge in order to design, build and maintain structures machines, devices, system, materials and process.

The discipline of engineering is extremely broad and encompasses a range of more specialised fields of engineering, each with a more specific emphasis on particular areas of technology and types of application.
In recent years India has emerged as leader in technology globally. Engineering education in India has always been a coveted option for bright students at 10+2 level.

There are several engineering colleges imparting technical education in India. The IITs, NITs and other private institutes of repute are able to absorb only handful of students out of the lot appearing for entrance exams. The fallout of this rat race to secure a seat in engineering college has resulted in rampant growth of engineering colleges. Consequently the overall quality of education has gone down and there is a significant gap between the expectations of the industry vis-a-vis the engineering education being imparted by the colleges thereby creating a vacuum of quality engineers. Institutions need to focus on building engineering minds and not just engineering hands. Moreover, the students need to be taught the latest in the industry.

For good engineering education, good engineering colleges are required. Well equipped infrastructure, both physical and academic, plays a vital role in the dissemination of knowledge. Colleges should acknowledge, improvise and adapt itself by offering innovative teaching aids, good library, laboratories etc to their students.
In the field of education especially while imparting engineering education faculties are and should be the protagonist. Infrastructure is the enabler but teachers are the medium through which education is delivered so that they can produce best brains in the world.

Engineering is the application of science. Without engineering, science is just a philosophy. Engineering educations provides many openings for jobs for a person. The world need in plenty well equipped, talented technical graduates with the right attitude. There are job opportunities for those who have the potential.
Engineers can become researcher, technologist, entrepreneur, banker, philosopher, IAS etc.
