The recent economic turmoil witnessed by the US &
the trade policy fiascos happening all across are a major indicators of the
turbulent times ahead for all. This transient state of affairs that Indian
economy is also going through is sure to do two things, one would be the
emergence of humanities as a major sector of investment by large & local
MNC’s & second would be the paradigm shift of focus of companies from
“let’s hire’’ to “let’s retain” the best of their talent pool.
Of-course it’s a given fact that the best talent has
to be nurtured & in some cases also pampered to the hilt. The increase in
salaries of CEO’s across boards of various MNC’s is just about that, albeit a
bit short of “pampering” though. The HR function can serve as a partner in
determining what is needed or what is possible in formulating corporate values
and sustainability strategy. At the same time, HR should play a key role in
ensuring that employees implement the strategy consistently across the
organization. Sustainable human resource management (HRM) can be defined as
using the tools of HR to create a workforce that has the trust, values, skills and
motivation to achieve a profitable triple bottom line.
HR’s approach must always reflect the business
approach to sustainability. Managers should follow a broad roadmap that moves
through engaging talented individuals of the HR function, identifying critical areas
that the HR function faces and examining all the policies, processes,
structures and cultural alignments required to deliver a sustainable HR
strategy effectively.
